What a Great Day Volunteering at The Rainbow Centre

The Rainbow Centre

One thing we love is helping others. At Coconnect, we’re incredibly lucky to get the opportunity to spend time in our local community volunteering to help worthwhile causes. Late last year we helped out at the Portsmouth Food Bank, where we picked and packed over 70 food parcels for people in need. And earlier this year we got to spend the day helping The Rainbow Centre set up their new charity shop in Fareham.

Rainbow Centre

The Rainbow Centre is an amazing charity who help with specialised neuro-rehabilitation for children and adults with neurological conditions and disabilities. They don’t receive any government funding, and they’re completely dependent on donations and support from others, so their charity shops are vital to bring in some much needed income for the charity.

The Centre was founded back in 1990 by a small group of parents who were looking to provide the very best help and support for their children with Cerebral Palsy. Since then, they’ve grown considerably and have been changing the lives of children and adults with neurological conditions (including acquired brain injuries). People travel from all over Hampshire (and further afield!) to attend.

A tour of the Rainbow Centre.

When we arrived, The Rainbow Centre’s Head of Fundraising and Communications Charlotte Chandler gave us an introduction and tour. The Centre is a purpose built centre with dedicated indoor and outdoor spaces for both their children and adult participants. We got to meet some of the amazing team who work and volunteer there, and then had the chance to sit in on a couple of the sessions that were taking place that morning.

To start we met with some of the children (who did a fantastic job at welcoming us with their good morning song!) before moving on to see how some of the adult participants benefitted from their session. Afterwards, Charlotte took us down to get to work helping at their new charity shop!

Getting stuck in.

The Rainbow Centre’s new charity shop is located in the heart of Fareham (so it’s nice and easy to get to no matter if you’re driving or taking public transport!). This is their second shop in Fareham, and focuses mainly on clothing.

We met the team who had been working hard to get the shop set up and then got to work! We helped with cleaning, dusting, labelling and tagging so the shop was ready for their grand opening a couple of days later. After that, we helped with sorting through the stock room getting things organised and put away so they had a bit more room. They had lots of bags of donations, so we spent time going through them and sorting into seasonal groups so it’s easier for them to find what they need!

We ended the day with a promise that we’d be back for their grand opening!
