Digital proactive monitoring.

Since considering the UKSIC revised guidelines for Appropriate Monitoring, Schools and Multi-Academy Trusts are first learning about Proactive Monitoring. Proactive Monitoring is an essential tool for schools to use in online safeguarding and protecting children from harm. Here is some information on Proactive Monitoring and what it can achieve for schools.

What is Proactive Monitoring?

Proactive Monitoring is a digital monitoring solution where alerts are managed and supported by third-party providers. They will categorise the alerts’ risk levels and remove any false positives. The system analyses content on screens in real-time.

The online safeguarding system will categorise alerts into the level of risk, high-risk, low risk, etc. If a student’s life could be in danger, the system will act instantly, contacting the relevant contacts in school and, action can happen swiftly. Low-risk alerts are documented against individuals and turned into high risks if a pattern of behaviour shows the student could be vulnerable, allowing early intervention from the school.

Active vs Proactive Monitoring

Active Monitoring violations are, reported and sent to the school, and they will review to act on them with immediate action taken with high-risk alerts. The main difference with Proactive monitoring is the action taken is from an expert/moderator providing schools with additional support. Therefore, action happens in real-time. In addition, Proactive Monitoring reports patterns of behaviour and creates an alert if a student behaviour shows subject to vulnerability allowing early intervention.

How Coconnect partners Proactively monitor?

All Schools have different requirements for their monitoring and their preferred method. Here is some information on Coconnect Partners Proactive Monitoring Systems:

Smoothwall – On-screen content is online and offline, captures activity on the web browser, word documents, and messaging apps as examples. The system will first automatically categorise the risk level of any alerts. Smoothwall in-house moderators will review captures 24/7 and contact the relevant contacts for any risks that need urgent attention, allowing Schools to intervene when a student’s life is at risk promptly. The Smoothwall system will report against an individual and move any individual to high risk if a pattern of behaviour materialises and the student is vulnerable, therefore, allowing early intervention from the school.

Senso – The difference in the Senso approach is that it is a piece of software that sits on school devices. The software indicates to relevant staff of pupils who may be vulnerable or at risk, pupils who pose a threat, and inappropriate or harmful behaviours. The software takes screenshots of inappropriate images and keywords from the inbuilt keyword library to identify pupils who may be at risk and alerts staff to any critical incidents. Senso has recently launched Assisted Monitoring. A team of Safety Experts that will categorise the risks and provide further support on alerts that need immediate attention.

Can Proactive monitoring ensure student safety?

Yes, it can ensure students’ safety. Proactive Monitoring gives schools the capability to act quickly to any threat to a students’ health on devices online and offline at all hours of the day. Also, the ability to intervene early on potentially safeguarding vulnerable students who have shown a concerning pattern of behaviour mitigates the risk of a student getting to a stage where they might harm themselves or someone else.
