We felt like it would be a good idea to provide Schools with more information on Cyber Security and Cyber-attacks, with it being a hot topic. This article will include what Cyber Security and Cyber Attacks are, common types of Cyber-Attacks, Prevention Techniques, and the importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding and protecting your school.
What is Cyber Security and what are Cyber Attacks?
Cyber Security is the application of protecting networks, devices, and data from cyber-attacks. Several layers of Cyber Security are needed to prevent Cyber-attacks and safeguard sensitive data.
Cyber-attacks aim at accessing sensitive information to change, destroy or extort money from the user in exchange for the data.
What are common cyber-attacks in School?
Phishing – Is a technique used to deceive the user into downloading harmful software or giving user credentials. Phishing attempts are usually via email containing a link for the user to click on disguised as a document or a link for the user to provide their credentials.
Ransomware – encrypts the target files on the system so the user cannot access them. The attacker then demands payment to restore access to the files. Which usually occurs when a user opens a malware file or link on a network-connected device. Ransomware could target Schools’ financial records or contacts data.
Password Attack – is an attempt to gain access to systems by cracking the users’ passwords. Once they have worked out the users’ passwords, they have access to sensitive information or make admin changes to the network.
How to prevent Cyber-attacks?
Training and Awareness – it is paramount for staff to understand and be aware of cyber threats, especially phishing emails, the most likely way they would be, targeted. Also, to pass on their skills and learning to others.
Multi-Factor Authentication – Is an authentication method that requires the user to provide two or more verification factors to gain access. The user puts their login details into a device. Their mobile device will get a notification that they can click to approve sign-in. Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator is an alternative to a text message notification where the application sends an approval notification. The user needs to accept or deny log in. Multi-Factor Authentication is useful against password attacks. Therefore, preventing cyber criminals from signing in and encrypting the network.
Anti-Virus Software – Also known as anti-malware, is a computer program used to prevent and remove malware. Coconnect partners with ESET to provide schools networks with anti-virus and firewalls to protect from malware attacks.
Why Cyber Security is essential in safeguarding and protecting your school?
An increasing number of schools and multi-academy trusts are now seriously impacted by cyber incidents. Schools hold a lot of sensitive information which needs to be kept confidential for GDPR and Safeguarding reasons. Schools are inclined to protect children from harm keeping sensitive data safe ensures that.
Cybercriminals want to make money. They understand schools have private data which, they need to ensure is not public. If a Cyber-attack occurs, the criminals might ask the school to pay ransom to get it back or for them to not sell it on.
